Sturgeon School Division’s learning centres in the towns of Morinville and Gibbons operate as outreach schools. The learning centres provide alternative high school settings that offer an opportunity to earn high school credits using a flexible, individualized approach. Many of the students enrol in one or two courses while some attend on a full-time basis.
The small school nature of the Morinville Learning Centre provides for informal but supportive teacher-learner relationships. The centres provide students the opportunity to progress at a pace appropriate for them as well as benefit from personalized face-to-face instruction and feedback and the development of an individualized learning plan focused on the needs of the student. Courses are offered in all levels of math, science, English, social studies, CALM, RAP, work experience and many other career and technology (CTS) options.
In addition to regular daytime hours, the centres offer teacher assistance in the evenings and summer school programs. This flexibility allows students to fit their education around a variety of responsibilities such as jobs, families, other school programs and sports. The centres also provide support to students who desire home schooling alternatives. Together, Sturgeon School Division’s learning centres are successful in meeting the needs and goals of numerous students throughout the school year.
