What is the Sturgeon Learning Centre?
The Sturgeon Learning Centre is an alternative high school which provides high school credit courses using a flexible, individualized approach. The school is sanctioned and approved by Alberta Education. The courses offered and credits earned by students are applied towards their high school diploma.
How does it work?
Certified teachers are at the Learning Centre every day to work with students. A schedule is prepared that allows the student to work at a pace that fits his or her individual situation.
The Learning Centre uses both school-developed components and Alberta Distance Learning materials. Courses are broken up into modules to be completed on or off-site. Completed modules and final exams are marked on site and marks are submitted directly to Alberta Education.
Attendance is not mandatory; however, students are encouraged to attend regularly to receive assistance and instruction. This ensures continuous progress.
Prospective Students
The Learning Centre is a place for:
- young adults age 15 to 19 who want to get a high school diploma but find it difficult to be successful in the traditional environment for a variety of reasons.
- students who need an extra course or need to repeat a course.
- students who were unable to schedule a specific course into their timetable.
- students who have dropped out of school.
- adult students, 20 years or older, who need high school courses.
- people who are working and cannot attend school regularly.
