Political Activism

Our Board of Trustees advocates for Sturgeon Public Schools's top priorities, which include sustainable funding and infrastructure. These efforts help our Division provide our teachers and students with the environment and resources they need to continuously improve. They support significant wins for our students and communities, such as the new school in the Town of Morinville and completing a major renovation project at Sturgeon Composite High School.

Meet with Ministers and/or Deputy Ministers

Each school year, our trustees meet with the minister and deputy ministers from Alberta’s Ministry of Education. These meetings give our trustees an opportunity with key decision makers to discuss educational issues important to our schools and students.

Meet with MLAs

Our trustees ensure our locally elected MLAs are aware of Sturgeon Public Schools needs and plans. Not only do our trustees have scheduled meetings with our local MLAs, but MLAs are also invited to attend board meetings and provide representation at Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta (PSBAA) and Alberta School Councils' Association (ASCA) forums.

Meet and Liaise with Local Politicians

Our schools are at the heart of our communities, which is possible through close working relationships with our municipal politicians. Our trustees connect regularly with local governments to address concerns and work on key priorities for the school division and our communities. The municipalities within our school division include Sturgeon Countythe Town of Bon Accordthe Town of Gibbonsthe Town of Morinvillethe Town of Redwater and the City of St. Albert.

Meet and Liaise with Other Alberta School Boards

School boards from across the province often have common goals and challenges. Our trustees seek key networking opportunities to work with other school boards to meet our common goals together. Our trustees attend meetings—offered through the ASBAPSBAA and ASCA—that are specific to Sturgeon Public Schools issues.

Conduct Pre-Election Advocacy

Our trustees work hard to ensure elected politicians and nominees running in an election are aware of the unique challenges facing Sturgeon Public Schools. They make recommendations for actions that can be taken on a political level to solve these issues. Our Trustees perform this work with a high level of skill and sensitivity, producing the best results for the school division and our communities.

Support and Advocate for ASBA, PSBAA and ASCA

Our Trustees work together with Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta (PSBAA) and Alberta School Councils' Association (ASCA). This includes sharing resources, advocating together and working together to achieve our common goals.
