Athletics

Physical education promotes health, fitness, active living and well-being. It also teaches important life skills such as hard work, discipline, teamwork, preparation, goal-setting and time management.

In addition to fulfilling the core requirements for physical education as set by the Alberta curriculum, Sturgeon Public Schools also offer a variety of specialty programs, options courses and extracurricular activities for sports and athletics.

Dance Academy

Dance Academy is offered to students in Grades 5 to 9 at Four Winds Public School. It develops students as athletes using the technical aspects of various styles of dance.

The instruction includes part of the student’s Physical Education curriculum requirements, all Health curriculum requirements and time outlined for other subjects/optional courses for respective grade levels.

Eighty percent of the instruction is focused on dance, while the other 20 per cent is devoted to other athletic opportunities, which may include activities like swimming, jiu jitsu and rock climbing.

Hockey Academy

Hockey Academy is offered to students in Grades 5 to 9 at select Sturgeon schools. It offers youth the opportunity to have hockey training and skills development within the school environment. The goals are to:

  • Develop balanced athletes with an emphasis on overall fitness and health
  • Promote good sportsmanship in a safe and controlled environment
  • Develop and improve on and off ice hockey skills
  • Promote the passion for the game of hockey

The instruction includes part of the student’s Physical Education curriculum requirements, all Health curriculum requirements and time outlined for other subjects/optional courses for respective grade levels.

Individual Sport

When students participate in individual sports, they combine physical fitness development with mental development. Individual sports build independence, and youth learn to solve problems, think on their feet and take responsibility.

At Sturgeon Public Schools, individual sports are offered at all school levels. Delivery includes as a complementary course, as part of a successful school team or as an extracurricular club.

Inter-School Sport

Sturgeon Public Schools offers a variety of opportunities for junior high girls and boys to compete in inter-school sports, including badminton, basketball, cross county running, track and field and volleyball.

Intramurals

Sturgeon Public Schools runs intramural programs so students can build friendships across grade levels, feel a sense of belonging and learn important lifelong values regarding fitness and health.

Intramurals typically happen during the noon hour break. A variety of sports and physical activities are offered throughout the year, including badminton, basketball, dodge ball, floor hockey, handball, relay races, soccer and volleyball.

Sport for Life

Keeping active for life with recreation sport & physical activity

The Sport for Life (SFL) Program is based on the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) model, which is a movement to improve the quality of sport and physical activity in Canada through improved athlete training and better integration between all stakeholders in the sport system, including sport organizations, education, recreation and health.The Sport for Life Program is offered at Four Winds Public School

 

 

Sports Leadership

Sports for Life and Sports Leadership are programs offered at select Sturgeon schools for students in Grades 5 to 9. It offers youth the opportunity to train and develop skills in a variety of athletics. While the main focus is on hockey (30 to 40 per cent), other sports and activities explored may include football, rugby, rock climbing, baseball, swimming and track and field.

The goals are to:

  • Develop balanced athletes with an emphasis on overall fitness and health
  • Promote good sportsmanship in a safe and controlled environment
  • Develop and improve a variety of athletic skills
  • Promote the passion for sports and active living

The instruction includes part of the student’s Physical Education curriculum requirements, all Health curriculum requirements and time outlined for other subjects/optional courses for respective grade levels.

Team Sports

Team sports provide kids with important lessons on personal values, friendship, teamwork, confidence, discipline and healthy living. They learn to work together with peers, accept decisions and understand that people have different abilities.

Sturgeon Public Schools offers various opportunities to participate in team sports at all school levels. This may include as a complementary course, as part of a successful school team or as an extracurricular club. We also offer innovative Hockey Academy and Sport for Life programs at select schools.
